Clipping in can be intimidating, but with a bit of practice it becomes completely natural. Here’s how to master it safely.
1. Practice on grass or a soft surface
This removes the fear of falling and builds confidence.
Start with:
Mounting
Clipping one foot in
Pushing off
Then clipping the second foot in
2. Start with your dominant foot clipped in
Clip in one foot while balanced
Push off and gain speed
Clip your other foot in once stable
Speed = stability. Moving too slowly makes clipping harder.
3. Look ahead, not at your pedals
Keeps your balance steady and prevents wobbling.
4. Unclip early when slowing down
Aim to unclip 2–3 seconds before stopping.
Choose one “default” foot to unclip every time so it becomes automatic.
5. Keep tension loose at first
Most pedals allow you to adjust release tension.
Looser = easier to pop out during learning.
6. Expect one or two slow-motion tip-overs
Every cyclist has done it — it’s part of the process.
The goal is to practice so it doesn’t happen on race day.
Summary
Clipping in becomes automatic with repetition. Practice in a safe environment, build confidence, and develop the habit of unclipping early.
